My January Rose
Frozen in pose
Notwithstanding my frozen nose
Nor my heavily booted toes
Why art thou in bud?
Since the fall
You have braved tall
Through wind, rain, and all
Remaining still small
Wilt thou ever bloom?
The winter chill
Keeps you dwarfed to nil
In vibrant color you thrill
Pink with promise until . . .
There be blossom?
We shall see;
Though it seems to me
Come February
No more will you be
A January Rose
This poem is just a little whimsy to start our new year. Based on the true story of My January Rose, which was - just last week - My December Rose - and before that - November and October Rose! It seemed leftover from the season. While everything else was dying this little rose bush was coming to bud with only the second rose of the year! I expected that when the first frost came in November it would die. Wasn't I surprised to see it's green bud turn to a soft pink - and increase in size.
Ever so slowly.
I had thought to share it with you all in December - but, alas! I couldn't get near Blogland in that hectic month to do so. Serendipitously, though, this makes for the perfect Pink Saturday post to christen 2013!
So - Happy New Year
to one and all
this Pink Saturday!
I receive My January Rose as a gift from God, and pray you are encouraged - as I am - to HOPE for beauty in what is shaping up to be a year of slippery slopes and tumult on many fronts. Even in the dark cold winters of our lives God's promises are true - a flower grows . . .
And - just for emphasis - here's a parting shot of the very last bloom still attracting attention on one of my geraniums! Pink - of course!
This geranium and my rosebud are the only bits of color left in my garden. Amazing . . .

P.S. I have been getting a slew of SPAM COMMENTS signed "Anonymous" that clog up my comment moderation. So glad I don't just allow them to post without approving. However, does this mean I have to do word verification to stop this? Where did these nasty folks come from? Any ideas out there - please email me suggestions at misskathypwp@gmail.com.

Ah, these brave winter defying flowers! An inspiring sight indeed.
Hello...I'm visiting your blog via Pink Saturday. What a sturdy little rose!
I look forward to visiting again. Happy New Year to you!
A rose is still pretty to me in any condition. That bud is gorgeous.
A slow flowering rose is the best one, I have a yellow one like that and it's a beauty.
Merle....
Oh how lovely - we had one go quite a while last year, mostly due to the mild fall and winter. This year, they're all gone and for once in my life I'm praying hard for snow - to kill the bugs and allergens. :)
Have fun enjoying that lovely rose and have a blessed New Year.
Happy Pink Saturday!!
And a blessed 2013...I know God has good things for us this year..stop by "My Sweet Prairie Home" and take a look around...
Happy New Year right back to you, and I love your gifts of pink. I have some camelias here but that's basically it, and I'm wayyyy south of you.
This post, these images brought tears to my eyes. I so needed it, in all its peaceful repose. Been too busy to stop and smell. A breath from Heaven.
Big hug,
Kelley~
Oh Kathy - how beautiful! And this was my favorite part of your message today - "Even in the dark cold winters of our lives God's promises are true - a flower grows..."
That flower is HOPE, and it springs eternal because of the Son who brought us LIFE. May we never forget that Truth!!
I loved the poem, too.
GOD BLESS! (From the "Rose of Sharon"!!)
A pink rose bud in January, now that is a special gift.
Love your little poem too.
So old-fashioned. So you.
Cheers,
Leah
Hello dear friend! The rose is beautiful. I have one bush my my front door that keeps producing roses! It just won't give up.
I read your remark about some spam comments. I've had a couple lately. I really don't want to put the code thing back on my blog. I'm watching it...strange people.
Hope all is well in your world. How are your newlyweds?
Love,
Linda

What a special gift from Our Creator! Guess that shows we can bloom where we are planted--whether our circumstances are conducive to growth or not.
I had to turn off anonymous comments. Blogger caught most of them but they were a pain in my inbox.
Hello Kathryn, Your post is lovely! I adore the poem you wrote about your winter rose! You write so well. The flowers do seem to be behaving oddly this year (and last too). But it is a hopeful thing isn't it? We can use all the hope we can!
It is already the middle of January, hard to believe! I hope that you are well and that we will see a little more of you : )
Sending you a warm (((hug)))
Terri
Enjoyed this post so much! I missed you! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

Hi Kathyrn, Your rose bush was a great inspiration for your poem. Loved it so much.
I get SPAM by the thousands but my Apple does not let it come through. I go to comments in typepad and delete thousands of them every single day. Amazing and annoying. Shocking really.
I am getting ready to start my valentines soon. I am looking forward to doing them so much.
Happy days to you and yours dear friend.
Hugs, Jeanne
